Do I need a high potassium diet?

There has been always a debate on the appropriate amount of potassium to be taken by different people. Some people have even argued that everyone needs a high potassium diet.

Who needs a high potassium diet?  More potassium is needed for people who frequently lose fluids. This is because the fluids lost from the body contain potassium regardless of their type. For those falling in the category of average Americans, you already have a deficit of this nutrient. Efforts should always be made to replace lost potassium otherwise, the deficit will continue growing. It is estimated by the Institute of Medicine that an average American receives less than ½ the recommended potassium quantity on a daily basis. Replacing potassium isn’t a task that needs you to strategize for a long time; simply take foods rich in potassium.

Maybe someone is wondering ways through which these fluids containing potassium are lost. They are the normal biological body functions which comprise vomiting, diarrhea, excessive spitting among other related activities. However, recovering lost potassium is not only through intake of foods rich in potassium; one can also take pills as well as liquids.

Deficiency in potassium can make a patient vulnerable to a heart rhythm that isn’t regular as well as death. This is more so with patients on diuretics of losing potassium. There have been cases of deaths among bodybuilders taking diuretics prior to contests.
Some other activities that cause sweating also lead to loss of potassium. Football players always lose fluids and thus should strive to regain lost potassium. Such people involved in vigorous physical activities need potassium, sodium and water for them to secure their health.

There has been a misconception that people doing physical exercises have their health fully secured. Even though this to some extend is true, it only works perfectly alongside supportive habits such as appropriate diets.
